SYNARC's Co-Founder Published in Leading Scientific Journal

Dr. Harry Genant is Lead Author on Vertebral Fractures in Osteoporosis International

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – March 19th, 2007 —SYNARC, the world's largest provider of centralized imaging services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, announced today that co-founder Harry K. Genant, M.D. is the lead author in an original article published by Osteoporosis International.

Dr. Genant's article was based on a study that focused on the severity of vertebral fracture as it reflects the deterioration of bone microarchitecture. According to Dr. Genant, vertebral fractures are the classic hallmark of osteoporosis, a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass. The objective of the study was to determine whether the   assessment of four grades of vertebral fracture severity could serve as a noninvasive surrogate marker for trabecular bone volume and microarchitecture.

The results of Dr. Genant's findings "provide evidence that vertebral fracture severity is associated with a continuum of cancellous and cortical microarchitectural deterioration that is measurable in transiliac bone biopsies."

Osteoporosis International is at the forefront of its field, publishing high quality, strictly refereed papers on the practical diagnosis, management and treatment of osteoporosis and related diseases.

In addition to being a co-founder and Member of the Board of Directors of SYNARC, Dr. Genant is also Professor Emeritus of Radiology, Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery, at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).  He founded the Osteoporosis and Arthritis Research Group (OARG) in the Department of Radiology at UCSF in 1986, and served as its Executive Director. The OARG was widely acclaimed as a leading source of research in noninvasive imaging methods applied to osteoporosis, arthritis and orthopedics.
